    This position performs various geographic information system (GIS) functions for the Department of Transportation. Duties include, but are not limited to creating GIS product development projects (e.g., maps, geodatabases, spreadsheet); creating and maintaining GIS SQL database tables; updating layer files to a Feature Class or Route Event to the SD DataHound; creating annual Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) maps; creating web services for publishing or creating web applications using ArcGIS Online; creating, updating and maintaining GIS process documentation and Metadata; representing the Department of Transportation on the GIS Technical Advisory Group; and providing technical guidance and training to GIS users.

    The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

    A bachelor's degree in geography, geographic information sciences or a related degree and experience in geographic information systems is preferred.

    Knowledge of:  

    • ArcGIS Online (preferred but not required);
    • principles and techniques of Geographic Information System;
    • standard terminology, techniques and practices of database management.

    Skill to: 

    • communicate effectively;
    • use ESRI platform (e.g., ArcGIS for Desktop, ArcGIS Online, Collector, etc.).

    Ability to: 

    • display high standards of ethical conduct;
    • attend to all details of assignments and completes work properly, accurately, and thoroughly;
    • treat customers courteously and is responsive to their needs;
    • set priorities, schedule activities, acquire resources, and monitors progress to ensure the successful completion of projects and assignments;
    • work cooperatively with others and promote a friendly work climate in order to achieve shared goals.
