  • The Structural Engineer will perform structural and general civil work under the supervision of an Engineering Manager and within a team of Engineers. This role analyzes issues, produces alternative solutions and coordinates work with team members to produce design drawings to be used for construction, including using all County standards. At times, the Engineer will coordinate and/or manage work performed by outside consultant.

    Duties and Responsibilities
    The Structural Engineer:

    • Exhibits an understanding of engineering issues and their solutions
    • Delivers studies and/or design documents that meet or exceed client's expectations and coordinate with them through the Construction phase, especially with respect to scope, schedule, budget, and also for related items such as constructability, appropriateness, and cost effectiveness
    • Regularly communicates with the client, as well as with other teams within Harris County Engineering and others impacted by the construction
    • Ensures correct tracking of their projects is updated on a regular basis within the County's e-Builder system
    • Understands and implements Harris County Engineering Department procedures and protocols are essential to success in this position
    • Mentors and/or manages Engineers-In-Training and other team staff if needed
    • Reviews Manufacturer's Data when selecting a solution from a vendor
    • Works on many types of projects while serving as subject matter expert for the team on significant structural projects such as buildings, tunnels and bridge related projects made of concrete, steel and wood structures
    • Performs additional duties as assigned to assist with recovery efforts, including assisting in ensuring Harris County has safe infrastructure following local disasters
    • Not all duties are listed above; other duties may be assigned


    • Professional Engineer (PE) License under the Texas Board of Professional Engineers


    • PE License in another State; and
    • Proof of eligibility to obtain PE license in the State of Texas within three (3) months of hire, as a condition of employment


    • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university
    • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in Structural Engineering and Design
    • Experience in the design of wood, steel and concrete structures, general civil design and the preparation of engineering plans
    • Proficiency in preparing Structural calculations on a variety of buildings, bridges, tunnels and vertical features
    • Experience performing quantity take offs and cost estimates on structural projects
    • Ability to interface with other disciplines and work in a multi-disciplinary environment
    • Proficiency in Civil 3D 2019 or later version
    • Ability to understand and use TxDOT Structural programs for Bridge design
    • Ability to use Windstorm software for computing wind loading
    • Ability to produce structural specifications /Requisitions/ perform Equipment selection for Client approval in fast-track environments

    Additional Requirements

    • Strong leadership and troubleshooting skills
    • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
    • Ability to adapt to priorities in the event of emergency or short turnaround projects
    • General computer proficiency, MS Excel, Word and other associated office software
    • Ability to learn and use project tracking software
    • A valid driver's license (Texas upon hire) and a good driving record
      • Must provide and maintain proof of automobile liability insurance upon employment

    Physical Requirements
    This position requires bending, stooping and lifting up to 25 lbs., frequent walking, standing, sitting, reaching, and ascending/descending stairs. The position also requires field work that may include exposure to inclement weather, walking or climbing on uneven surfaces, and other environmental exposures.

    • Master's Degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis
    • Eight (8) years of relevant experience in Structural Engineering and Design
    • Professional Engineer (PE) License under the Texas Board of Professional Engineers
    • Familiarity with the standards and good engineering practices for buildings, park facilities, bridges, tunnels and industry codes
    • Familiarity with the latest versions of the IBC, ASCE, Wood, ACI, AASHTO, and AISC Standards
