  • The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidate’s qualifications and experience. In addition to the starting salary, employees in the Transportation Specialist classification shall also receive an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation pay.

    The Department of Transportation is looking to fill one Transportation Specialist position in the Transportation Planning & Project Delivery’s (PPD) Transportation Options group. The position will focus on development, regulation, and administration of micro-mobility solutions such as bike-share and e-scooters systems.

    The Transportation Specialist will be advancing the transportation goals of the Envision San José 2040 General Plan through coordination of shared micro-mobility in San Jose, specifically through implementation of the City’s Shared Micro-Mobility Permit Program.  This position fulfills key communications and program monitoring roles by effectively coordinating with City staff, partner, and neighbor agencies, shared micro-mobility operators, and community members.  This position reports to the Associate Transportation Specialist that manages the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Program.

    The ideal candidate will provide excellent public service, be socially and politically adept, work well both independently and in a team environment, develop technical methodologies for surveying and reporting, be skilled in a wide variety of software, manage numerous shared micro-mobility operators and device types, creatively solve problems, and effectively communicate in situations that are sometimes controversial and/or ambiguous. The ideal candidate also has ability to apply progressive and sound principles of transportation planning to shared micro mobility programs.  Ability to communicate in Vietnamese and/or Spanish is desired, but not required.

    Key duties include but are not limited to:

    • Planning, coordination, documentation, analysis, reporting, budgeting
    • Program monitoring for compliance with permit regulations
    • Program reporting and communications including communicating with internal and external stakeholders
    • Program education and outreach coordination

    The position requires occasional attendance and participation at evening and weekend public meetings and events, as well as periodic field surveys throughout the city.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    (These qualifications are typically required.  An equivalent combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be substituted.) 

    EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in transportation planning, city and regional planning, urban studies, civil engineering, environmental studies or related field.

    LICENCES/CERTIFICATES:  Possession of a valid driver’s license authorizing operation of a vehicle in the State of California is required.
